February 2012 - October Snow

How I did it -

We all must have one of these of the October snowfall this past fall. I took this image from my living room window with a 28-75 mm lens. I didn't want to go out in the premature, snowy, winter weather. After cropping it a bit for balance, I added a little contrast and 'punched' up the colors in Lightroom 'presets'. I sharpened just a little and added the post vignette white border to soften the image and increase the impact of the snow.

Administrator "Food for Thought" as you make your comments:

These come from the PSA Image Analysis course, Creativity & originality, Lighting, Dimension/Perspective, Impact. How does the image make you feel? Noise and /or Grain, Focus, depth of field, Tonal range, Image Balance, Composition, Line, eye movement, Exposure, Do the elements within the frame feel comfortable. Also from the course are these suggestions; Split your comments in two, 1) Describe as many elements as you can that are done well, and why. If you have a comment you should have a reason. 2) Describe as many elements as you can that need help, and why. If you have a comment you should have a reason. If you have a fix for the problem say it here. This is where you help the maker and don't hesitate to send a small image of what you consider to be an improvement of the image.

Denise Borgess

In college, I took my first photography class and I was developing my own photos. As a young teacher, I formed a photo club in a high school setting complete with a dark room.  But as life took over and the diaper bag was competing with the camera bag, I put it away. I was always taking pictures, but simply to record life’s events.

My interest in photography resurfaced after several years when a friend suggested I take pictures of my garden flowers. As I worked to create a photo book of my garden, I knew the point and shoot camera I was using wasn’t allowing me to capture their essence. I bought a Canon Rebel xsi  and a macro lens to enable me to get close enough to live in those flowers. There was no turning back. I took a few photo classes at the NY Botanical Gardens and my photography passion grew further.  I take my camera with me everywhere and am always on the lookout for a photo op! Now I have joined a local photography club to learn and compete. As a teacher, I am always excited about learning and this is a great opportunity to develop my photography as an art form.
