July 2010 - Blue Light Downtown

How I Did It:

I love the colors just after sunset. We were standing on the bridge next to Lake Shore Drive in downtown Chicago and saw this great image. This is another HDR shot using Photomatix combine 3 images to bring out the tonal variations. Because of the perspective, there was a great deal of skewing of the buildings at the outer edges. I used Photoshop's transform to fix this and crop the image. I also did a little sharpening.

It's nice to see another HDR image from Mr Frank. Beautiful colours and reflections in watter add to the overall impact of the composition. However the image appears to be a bit soft, perhaps due to HDR effect.

Jim Hoskins

I really like this picture. It has great balance and depth. The asymetrical edges of the water lead the eye into the frame to the building with the aerial. The warm lights and reflections look great against the blue buildings. The detail is very fine and sharp.

My only nitpick would be to clone out the contrail in the sky as it competes with the lines of the tall subjects.

Karen Kaiser

Great shot! What you can do with HDR is wonderful. The color is moody yet the glowing warm tones counteract that feeling. Love the reflections in the water. This is quite an appealing image. The tourism board ought to have this for PR.

Denise Borgess

Beautiful. The composition and colors work very well here. It is well done!

Anita Luellen

Howard has captured beautiful blue tones and an excellent composition with leading lines that direct the viewer through the image.

Roxanne Overton

I want to stand there and take that image! The only thing I would have worked on is the contrail. Otherwise, it's picture perfect!
