February 2012 - The House is Dark

How I Did It:

I went to this abandoned high school in central Pennsylvania with my
camera club. It was a total disaster inside with debris and broken glass
everywhere. To me, it was weird yet interesting. There was an eerie light
coming through the windows of this auditorium and I liked the view of the
old piano from the balcony, sitting there in front of the empty seats, as
if a performance had just ended, the audience had gone home and all that
was left to do was sweep up.

In Adobe Camera RAW, I adjusted the white balance and exposure before
taking the image into Photoshop. I sharpened it and added a black & white
adjustment layer. From there, the contrast was tweaked. I also cloned out
the legs of another photographer's tripod.

Administrator "Food for Thought" as you make your comments:

These come from the PSA Image Analysis course, Creativity & originality, Lighting, Dimension/Perspective, Impact. How does the image make you feel? Noise and /or Grain, Focus, depth of field, Tonal range, Image Balance, Composition, Line, eye movement, Exposure. Do the elements within the frame feel comfortable. Also from the course are these suggestions; Split your comments in two, 1) Describe as many elements as you can that are done well, and why. If you have a comment you should have a reason. 2) Describe as many elements as you can that need help, and why. If you have a comment you should have a reason. If you have a fix for the problem say it here. This is where you help the maker and don't hesitate to send a small image of what you consider to be an improvement of the image.

Member Bio

"Since retiring from the information management business in 2004, I have been able to indulge my two passions: travel and photography, which has
been a part of my life since childhood.

In 2000, I began participating in juried/judged exhibits and have also mounted several solo shows. My work has been on display at the Susquehanna Art Museum, Harrisburg, PA and in the Doshi Gallery of the museum in the summer of 2009, at Gallery 212 in Leesburg, VA, on the cover of the Northeast Berks Chamber of Commerce Directory, and in other local venues.

My photographic muse takes me on a journey of its own making but favorite subjects have been landscapes, empty chairs and interesting places. Recent projects, however, include a book of portraits and experimenting with abstract images. I also enjoy writing for the PSA Journal."
