February 2012 - Winter Wheat

How I did it -

One of my favourite places to do landscapes which include the presence of humans. It is in the Palouse region, one hour south of Spokane, Washington, USA. This region extends into Idaho a bit. Taken from Steptoe Butte looking south. The texture and shadows are achieved by photographing an hour and shorter before sunset.

This is a scanned Velvia slide, and is adjusted to look like the original. It would have been taken with a Nikon F90s on a Tamron 200-500 at about 450mm and maybe F11 or F16.

Administrator "Food for Thought" as you make your comments:

These come from the PSA Image Analysis course, Creativity & originality, Lighting, Dimension/Perspective, Impact. How does the image make you feel? Noise and /or Grain, Focus, depth of field, Tonal range, Image Balance, Composition, Line, eye movement, Exposure, Do the elements within the frame feel comfortable. Also from the course are these suggestions; Split your comments in two, 1) Describe as many elements as you can that are done well, and why. If you have a comment you should have a reason. 2) Describe as many elements as you can that need help, and why. If you have a comment you should have a reason. If you have a fix for the problem say it here. This is where you help the maker and don't hesitate to send a small image of what you consider to be an improvement of the image.

Member Bio

Jim Hoskins

I spent most of my life in North Vancouver, BC, Canada and after finishing school, I worked in various trades as a telecommunications worker. I transferred to Salmon Arm, BC, a smaller town, in 1992, and my wife and I have both retired there. I like to spend time hiking, skiing, building/mantaining trails and of course, photography.

I have always had an interest in photography, but did not get a SLR until the late 70s. I took a few courses, and it was suggested to me to join a photo club. I have belonged to several, and now am a member of the Shuswap Photo Arts Club. I served as president for a number of years, and now function as teacher, judge, and mentor.

My main subjects of interest are landscape and nature, but can be tempted to do other things. I shoot film and digital, depending on circumstances. I need to replace all my camera equipment, computer and software. I have belonged to PSA before, taking part in a slide circuit in the 90s, but dropped out. I won this membership at a presentation in Spokane this spring. I think digital study groups on the internet is a great way to connect and see other's work, and to have comments on mine
