July 2010 - Sailboat in Maine

How I did it - I first increased saturation and contrast.

Then I used Autopaint with Watercolor followed by Autopaint > Artists > Impressionist

Boat – Cloner – Camel Oil 9% opacity

Blender – Grainy Blender

Cloner – Soft Cloner 5% to get a little detail back

Acrylic > Captured Bristle to add some color and brush strokes

Background – Blender soft blender

Artists > Impressionist

Added color – used brush and blender to get desired effect

Extended treetops into sky with color

Equalized

Added paper texture

COMMENTS:

Additional Maker's comments  I didn't finish the sky and am sure I'll hear about it!!
Kathy Potter Good use of color. This is incredible, looks just like an oil painting/water color blend!

The only thing that tends to distract me is the white glare on the boat, which is hard to correct. The glare can sometimes be corrected in Photoshop by using a filter, or just paint it in. ( I don't know my cows tended to glare also). I like the grainy affect you did with the sky. Good job!

Nick Muskovac I like the texture in this image; I might have added a little more blue to the sky. To my eye, the painting is dominated by the Artists> Impressionist. This gives it a very artistic painterly look.
Mindy Leeds I would like this image better if the boat and stream were not centered. To me, the boat is too white, it could use a little texture in it. I like the fall colors and your brush strokes.
Rhonda Campbell Very nice Impressionist look. I really like the way you write up how you did it. A big help. Thanks.
Shawn Schertzer I think the loss of detail in the sky and boat detract from a wonderful job with color and brush work on the foliage. After using autobrush, you might have considered painting back a little more detail in the boat, which is ostensibly, the subject of the work. Since you recognize the need for work on the sky, I will reserve those comments for the finished image.
Stephan Funke I am very afraid your first operaation ( add contrast) spoiled a big part of your highlights. I miss here more tonality in the sky, in the water and on the deck of the boat. But working in Painter one can easily replace or add colors. Your Autumn colors in the bushes and around the boat are wonderful and brush strokes are adding a lot to the picture. Beautiful job, but perhaps not fully finished???

Susan Bailey - Biography

I have been involved with photography for 40 years now... since a teenager. It has opened doors in my life beyond imagination, including aerial work and photographing clown conventions. More recently I have concentrated on nature images and some pet portraits. Painter fascinates me with the possibilities. I have used it for several years, but took a weeklong workshop with Marilyn Sholin last year and am continuing with training and experimentation on my own!
