Title - Anchor And Rope

How I did it -

The photo was taken in Cape Breton, in July. Taken with D3, 24-70 lens, F 19, 1/250, 250 iso, and -1 eva.  The photo was altered in photoshop as follows, levels adjusted for  highlights and shadows. Brightness was then adjusted   and a layer maskwas used to bring out the shadow details. The image was then converted to black and white. Localized sharpening was applied to further bring out the details. After the output sharpening the image was soft proofed for printing.

The image itself I like very much with nice angular line and lots of texture in the rock. That said, why take a -1 exposure and adjust the Brightness control?  Also, why use the Brightness control at all, it's such a pixel killer since the adjustment is totally linear. This bumps the shadows up by the same amount as the highlights. This image actually screams out for a 3 image HDR, not the garish treatment but to give you full scale.

An intriguing still life.  The anchor wields a presence which you brought to the frame.  I would consider softening the shadow and darkening the anchor to allow the anchor to jump out even more.

John Gilkerson

Well seen. And well photographed, there is a wonderful range of tones here.

I like the diagonals of the anchor and the rock.

Diane Bovenkamp

Great mood set by subject matter and the rocks upon which they were shot. Feeling of mountain-climbing, as done decades past (before the high-tech gear). Shadow of anchor, rope and anchor itself are forming many triangles that keep the eye looking in the area. Perhaps one of the rocks in the right foreground are a bit under-exposed? Not as much depth as given by other rocks.

Anu Nadimpalli

I feel that the contrast between the "black" anchor and the "white" rope is too harsh.

A very good subject for monochrome. Excellent composition with good angles and position of objects in the frame. The angles lead my eyes through the image. Your post processing is very effective. You might consider even a little more contrast. A strong image

TBD Bio

Paul Roth - Biography

I have been an avid photographer for the last 35 years.  I shoot portraits, nature, landscapes,

under water photography and of course  family pictures.  I also do all of my own printing.

My professional work as an Optometrist has given me a head start on some of the optics involved in

photography, but I see my forte as seeking out the soul of a person or scene.

I try to capture the essence of my subjects and convey that in a format that suits the theme.

I am primarily self taught, although I have taken some workshops on photoshop.

My work has received numerous awards at the Hamilton Camera Club.
