January 2012 - Priest

How I did it -

The photo was taken at the Chuch of the Holy Sepulcher. Nikon D3, 70-200mm lens at 190mm, f 2.8, 1/60 sec, 1600 iso. The only lighting came from several candles off the priests right. The image was brought into photoshop cs5, and converted from raw to tif. After adjusting  for brightness,
levels and contrast, it was converted to black and white.

Wow, you have the perfect camera and lens combination. Even the catch light is there from the candles. Perfect portrait.

At first I thought this images was too dark. Looking at it on my laptop rather than the Mac revealed so much more. I must do this with all images (including my own) from now on.
Those areas of the image other than the face are quite dark which creates an effective vignette around the real subject which is, of course, the face. A super portrait.

Beautiful tones and details. Only, maybe it would help to see a little more of his frontal body. On my computer, his face seems to be floating in the black background, unless of course that is the look you are going for.

A very strong image. I like the expression on the priests face. He appears natural and not posed. An excellent job of B/W conversion and post processing

TBD Bio

Paul Roth - Biography

I have been an avid photographer for the last 35 years.  I shoot portraits, nature, landscapes,

under water photography and of course  family pictures.  I also do all of my own printing.

My professional work as an Optometrist has given me a head start on some of the optics involved in

photography, but I see my forte as seeking out the soul of a person or scene.

I try to capture the essence of my subjects and convey that in a format that suits the theme.

I am primarily self taught, although I have taken some workshops on photoshop.

My work has received numerous awards at the Hamilton Camera Club.
