January 2012 - Crib Notes

How I did it -

I saw something musical about our toddler’s safe place.  As soon as I noticed the textures, I grabbed the camera, having learned that the light is never exactly the same the next day.  I used CS5 to bring out, with equal detail, the lighting variations and to assure the image had a focal point.
Happy New Year to All.  I have had an extraordinarily challenging year and am sorry for my absence of comments, in December.

I like the geometric lines of the rail and its shadows. The contrasting texture of the carpet and
the crib is also very interesting.

An interesting image with a nice range of tones and super textures. It would perhaps be better to have slightly stronger shadows. This is an object lesson in keeping ones eyes open and having a camera handy.
Your comment about the light never being the same the next day is one we should all take on board.

Nice observation. Something really beautiful happens sometimes when straight lines intersect with small print like that. Shadows can be a beautiful thing.

Paul Roth

Interesting, I can see how you liked the shadows, however, the image  doesn't do anything for me. I really dont have any suggestions on how to improve it.

Carl Soerens

A good example of seeing light and pattern where most would not see. You caught this at a good time when the shadows were strong. I would like to see your baby in there to complete the picture.

Richard Lotman Brown - Biography

After dropping out of an ivy-league college, I used a camera on-loan, from the local University, to shoot my first roll of 35 mm film. That roll included a photograph, soon, awarded in a regional competition. I am, essentially, self-taught or un-teachable, depending on whom you ask. Recently, two of my fine art photographs were acquired by the kemperContemporary Museum, for its Permanent Collection. In 2008, I was juried into the Soho Gallery, in Manhattan, a Guild, founded in 1971. Other places where my work has been, featured, lately, are Shutterbug and Photographic Magazine, the Palm Beach Photographic Centre, on an episode of ABC’s, Extreme Makeover, Home Edition, in the Sprint Corporate Collection and in the White House Art Collection, (non-partisan!) I have been fortunate to previously, enjoy success in a few careers. At age 21, I founded Smiling Faces Photographers. Employing a staff of fifteen, we covered most of the campus events. During college, I, also, shot sports pictures for release to local and national publications. Eventually, I obtained an MBA, a real estate license and an NASD, broker dealer’s license, I ventured into the investment and commercial real estate business, in the Midwest of the United States. Although I became Top Agent, my final year, I realized that I was still missing a creative outlet. Since I am a poor singer and cannot paint, I began a career writing and performing stand-up and producing live shows. I, then, combined all of my past experiences into the founding of a personal management business, in Hollywood. I oversaw the careers of actors, writers, musicians and, predominantly, comedians, in their emergence as national talent. Kathy Griffin, current star of her own show, “The D-List”, was a client, early in her career. I contributed a couple of jokes to Roseanne’s first Tonight Show appearance. As in comedy….timing. After ten years, it became time for me to return to my hometown of Kansas City and marry… finally! Anna and I are expecting our first child, on our second wedding anniversary. He will carry the namesake and, hopefully, inspiration of my father. The late, Mr. Brown was able to enjoy the timely, news of his future, first grandchild.
