Vase and Flowers

January

Title - Summer Loveliness

Photographer's Comments -

Well, it was summertime and the flowers were lovely. I tried to capture some of the lovliness brought inside so I could remember it right about now. Shot with my Canon Rebel SXi; 1/40 sec.; f/5.6; ISO 400; 37mm. In Lightroom 3 I adjusted the white balance slightly, cropped to bring it closer and slightly off-center, I upped the Vibrance and Luminance Smoothing, and sharpened, I think a little too much.

Great flower arrangement, good central focus and the image is nice and sharp, good varied colors of the flowers, the framing is great gives the picture a three dimensional feel, and the muted background adds to the overall effect, would not change anything.

Nice presentation. I think the composition is a little tight for my taste but it certainly works as presented. I am bothered by the OOF flowers on the left side and top. I think a larger f/stop... f/11 or f/16 would have kept everything in focus.

The right photo for an icy day in Washington. I like the composition and the cropping, but just a bit too much cropping on the left side where the edge touches the flower (a minor point). I do not think you over sharpened, but that the depth of field is insufficient to allow for sharpening of the whole flower arrangement. Well done.

Audrey Waitkus

Indeed it's good to have a reminder of summer. I like the positioning and the sharpness of the main flower. I would have liked to see the depth of field encompass the entire bouquet, or as an alternative, go entirely the other way and soften everything except the main flower and, if possible, the front of the vase even more than they are now.

Some of my careers include teaching, graphic design, and desktop publishing.

I am a beginning photographer, and used my photographs initially as reference material for my art. Presently I have a Canon Rebel XSi and a Canon PowerShot SD800 IS. I am studying photography and taking picures wherever and whenever. This EID study group of ours has helped me immensely with encouragement, suggestions, honest critiques, and its friendly camaraderie.
