photo taken in New Jersey of a tribute to the twin towers

January

Title - Empty Skies

Photographer's Comments -

This was shot recently at Liberty State Park in Jersey City New Jersey. This is the tribute to the twin towers. The structure in the foreground is actual steel beams from the towers. The memorial behind it was built to replicate the exact view the towers would have from that spot. Along the inner walls on the structure are the names of the New Jersey residents that were killed in the disaster. This was taken just after sunset with my tripod mounted Canon EOS5DMK2, with 17-40mm lens at 24mm, ISO 400, f/18, SS 15secs., the f/18 gave a slight starburst to the moon peeking through the clouds. The image was cropped about 10% from each side to remove some distracting elements. In Photoshop it was processed with curves, and I added some saturation in preparation for B&W conversion. It was then brought into NIK Silver Efex Pro 2 and processed to black and white. Finally I added a white stroke layer and resized.

Nice B/W of the steel beams making the memorial to 9/11, the image is sharp the blacks and whites have great separation and contrast, the composition is very good and the buildings in the background breaks up the black back ground. It appears you may have used the lens flare filter on the buildings though you don't indicate that you did.

A really creative shot which I like very much. The steel beams are the dominant element and overpower the memorial walls a bit. I do not know if a greater balance could be achieved. The moon adds a nice effect and helps draw the eye to the memorial walls. I have never worked with NIK Sliver Efex Pro 2, why did you use it to convert to B&W instead of Photoshop? Well done.

Audrey Waitkus

Excellent composition, and I definitely like the choice of black and white for the presentation. I think I would like to see a slight increase in contrast and brightness (or a slightly longer exposure) to emphasize the details.

This photo has a kind of ghostly and sad feeling for me. It seems to have a delicate lacey texture. What made it look that way? The gauzy buildings across the river, the moon and the memorial behind the steel beams add to the sadness it evokes. I guess I'm focusing on the feeling it elicits in me. As for the photo (grin), I wish I could see the end of the steel beem, but then the balance might not be as good as it is now--with the towers sliced by the beam and the moon right above of the the towers. I think this is a very special photo.

Biography

I grew up interested in photography, taking and developing pictures since the age of 9. In recent years I became interested in digital and I am a member of the Cranford Millburn Camera Club and Camera Naturalists Camera Club in New Jersey. I primarily use Canon equipment and I use CS4 for post-processing.

Professionally, I split my time as a sports medicine chiropractor, a college health professor, and an EMS educator. I am happily married and have 2 teenage children and 3 golden retrievers.

We spend a lot of time at our vacation home in the Adirondacks which provides me with the perfect backdrop to pursue my passion for photography. Feel free to check out my website at http://www.photoshelter.com/c/palmieri/gallery-list.
