photo of a mother giraffe and her suckling baby

January

Title - Suckling Giraffe

Photographer's Comments -

Taken recently on a trip back to S.Africa, an afternoon shot, we were lucky to see this group of Giraffe and the mother feeding the calf, they were quite far away, shot with 100-400 canon lens, 1/50 sec f-11, 320 mm. Cropped as much as possible, used Viveza 2 to darken areas of the calf and the rump of the mother, increased the saturation and used the hue slider to further warm the picture, and sharpened as the final step, we were at the right place at the right time. I did not blur or clone any of the surrounding bush as I wanted to show the natural environment that these animals live in as well.

Great capture. The story tells it all. Very sharp for a 1/50th. of second.

Great shot! The composition is really well done and not blurring background makes it feel like the viewer is right there with you. Very well done.

A lovely capture of a hungry calf and her watchful mother. I applaud your decision not to blur the background. This is a wonderful slice of life in the wild that most of us may never see in person, and I think it is more important to tell the story of the location than to create an artistic presentation by blurring the background.

How fortunate to get such a shot. The baby is utterly engrossed and the mom sees you, I think. This photo is framed well and well balanced, and indeed does show the natural environment well. The grass at their feet is a nice contrast to the greenery surrounding them. My only suggestion would be to increase the exposure slightly to show off their spots more. Very nice.

I am retired and I have been taking pictures seriously for four years, started with a canon point and shoot but soon found it to be inadequate for what I wanted to photograph so I bought a digital SLR and been happy with this style of camera. I shoot animals, birds, people, flowers, travel, and family. I am presently using the Canon 40D, I only have three basic lenses 17-85 4.5-5.6, 70-200F4L IS, and 100-400L IS all canon, I plan to get a few primes in the future. I belong to the Boynton Beach Camera Club which is very competitive and also to the camera club in our development which is not as competitive.
