January Image - Circles

How I did it -

This image was taken in the lobby of the Argonaut Hotel in San Francisco. The circles are florescent lit mirrors. I took a long zoomed exposure to create something out of nothing. The area was quite dark, so hence the dark areas to left & right. I have enhanced the saturation, and added a stained glass effect, this was just trying the effect out to see if it would help. Maybe not."

Gary Shinner - Biography
I live in a small town in South West Wales called Llanelli. My working back ground has always been engineering since leaving school. I started out as a Mechanical Fitter / turner. After 17 years moved into the Automotive & Aerospace sectors and for the last ten years been involved in main stream design, for aircraft interiors – 1st class seating. I suppose in some ways design plays a part in my photography interests, and one of favoured subjects is architecture. I had my first camera when I was ten years old, and over a number of years just took the odd picture now and again. In 1984 my direction changed at the hand of my now father in law (Wil), who at that time projected holiday images on a screen, much to my envy. This is where I bought my first 35mm camera. It wasn't until 1991 I joined a local camera club (Trostre / Velindre CC), and thus my enthusiasm took over. During 20 years of club life I have had some success. In 2007 I submitted work to the Royal Photographic society and was successful in attaining a 'Licentiate'. A chance meeting with Ian Ledgard back in 2008, was an introduction to the glory's of the International trail within the PSA & FIAP run competitions. I chanced my luck and to date have had 370+ acceptances from about 80 pieces of work, in the following divisions: CPID, EID, NT & PT, the later 2 being my weakest subjects. I'm at star 3 for CPID. 2nd star in the EID, 1st star Nature & PT, But I'm on the verge of applying for the next level in the four sections listed. Late 2010 I applied for my 'AFIAP', which was awarded in January 2011. I also have a great interest in creating Audio Visual, shows of my work, to entertain, and be as creative as possible, using innovative styles. Recently I have been invited to judge the Swansea International (Oct 11) which will be a first for me and a great honour. I strive to be diverse in all aspects of my photographic work. I'm hoping that I can bring something new to the mix with this EID creative group, time will tell. I do 'try' to use Photo-shop (Elements) but I'm a novice and always learning! I use Pentax & Sigma equipment.
