June Image - Protection

How I did it -

Digital manipulations on a simple clouds photo using "twirl". The intention was to simulate the "waves" as manifestation of motherhood protection.

Jim Hawkins This is a very dynamic picture Elli. The interaction between mother and child is very effective with her hovering in concern and it responding with innocent wonder. I think maybe if the baby was at full opacity it might be better. Also, given our new black background, a defining edge would help. I like your workup.

Frank Crommelin I like this image, it's very creative and well done, but like some of your work in the past it needs a larger format to do it justice (16 x 20). The baby is small by comparison maybe 5% of the image and the effects and details get lost in the very small image, also if you have the baby's missing legs I would include them. It kind of looks like the baby is falling out of the picture. It's a great cherub look, and wings would be a nice touch.

Ian Ledgard I have seen a few images which have utilised the twirl filter recently. Though it works pretty well here the effect now seems a little gimmicky. Not as good as some of your very creative baby images.

Great idea and a great use of the twirl filter.  It looks like a real wave.  Wish I’d thought of it.  This was a simple idea with a simple method of execution.  Although I understand what you were trying to convey, the wave seems more menacing than nurturing to me.  I might have made the infant a bit larger and placed it at full opacity within the curve of the wave.  Even then I might feel as if the wave is about to crash down and obliterate the infant.
Stephan Funke I think this is a clever idea but miss the final touch. My main concern is the not very clear face of the mother (at least compared with the baby) and the in complete body of the baby. I also have reservations about the huge empty space at the upside right-hand. I do hope to see this image again after Mrs Elli has done something about it. Again: A wonderful idea. By the way: The late great photographer Fredericio Pace from Argentina used this technique many time and I am one of his big fans. Pity he had to go so early........

Andrés Canepa I think you achieve the feeling of motherhood protection, is that the image makes me feel. But I wont to know haw you put the mother face in the right position and the baby, you mix the images and after twirl or twirl the sky and after put the mother face and the baby. The baby and mother are from the same photo or from different?

PSA member since 1999. PPSA 2005. I am a University Professor.

Well before the computer age, I used to make collages of photos by manual “cut and glue”. Making a collage took over one month. Now I do the same “cut and paste” much faster, and … no need for expensive glue and photo developing.

PSA exhibitions: in the past 6 years, over 1200 acceptances in various divisions, 32 countries, over 130 medals and HM.
