Title: ???? Georgia 1036 (January)

How I Did It:

Nancy would like you to help name this image.

This is an image of a car (so what else is new?) taken at another car show.  I guess I really do like photographing cars!  I used the fractalius filter first (after the usual adjustments in Photoshop.)  Then I added a little "umph" by going to the Nik Silver Efex Pro.  I used their Underexposed filter and came up with this result.  The original car was a bright red.  I thought this Nik filter gave it a little more mysterious "Al Capone" feel!...I don't think he made it to Georgia though!  I think I really need a better title…so any contributions will be welcome! I'm very glad our Study Group can communicate to each other in this manner.  It makes for more of a "one on one" feel among friends!!  I greatly appreciate all of your comments and have incorporated several of them for my finished products, so I'm thanking you in advance!

Brian Swinyard Nancy, clearly you have a thing about photographing cars and this is another stunning image in the series. Most of us would have been content with just using the Fractalius Filter but you have taken it a stage further by tweaking the image with Nik Silver Efex Pro. I like the way that your technique has changed the bright red original into a monotone which creates the illusion that black paint has been scratched away on a transparency to reveal the silver underneath. There is no colour confusion in the image which has been reduced to one of monochrome simplicity. I wondered whether the limits of the picture needed to be defined by say a one pixel stroked line to prevent the darker areas of the image bleeding out into the black background. Titles are so important with pictures as it is one of the few ways that we photographers can influence and shape the viewer’s perception of our work.  I would offer: Almost Perfect, Cobwebs & Strange, Light & Shade, Greased Lightning, Ghost Rider, Electrically Charged, Into The Unknown, Stealth, Silky Silence. Congratulations and very well done in your image ‘Deco Car’ being awarded The Best of Show (PSA Gold Medal) in the EID Creative Competition for Individuals. This is thoroughly well deserved.

Another image which has been handled well with the fractalius fliter. Making the image B&W has d interest. I would have like to compare the image with another that has all the headlight in and the round grill vent. But again it’s the way the author has thought that this was the image with interest.

Nancy, this is an unusual cropping of a car showing the essentials. The blackness and use of Fractalius lend it a real mystery. It kind of looks like it had been in an accident, especially the fender. I think I would prefer to see more of the bumper instead of having it cut off on the bottom edge, but otherwise a good job. Can't think of another name.

Barrie Bieler A neat bit of seeing and selecting.  Suggest a 5% wide medium gray frame around the image to "hold it in" a little better.
Rick Perkowski The detail of the car is extremely well done.  I personally would have like to have seen more or even all of the car using the same techniques.  On the other hand, seeing all of the car might take away from the abstract nature of this image; I am not sure.  Regarding a title, how about “Black Beauty” or “Midnight Car in Georgia”.  Very well done.

Nancy Springer - Biography

I have two sons (ages 50 & 48) and 5 grandchildren.  My husband and have our primary residence in Woodstock, GA and winter in Naples, FL.
We showed dogs (Keeshonds) for a number of years and had the top winning kennel in the southeast, with multiple Best In Shows. We showed our dogs ourselves rather than hiring a professional handler.  This competitiveness probably helped me with my photography skills in that I didn’t want to lose in competitions.
Photography has always been interesting and beautiful to me.  What a way to express your feelings and talent.  From a Brownie Hawkeye, as a child, to the digital camera of today, photography has become an art and an educational process for me.
I didn’t become a serious photographer until about four years ago after becoming associated with Silver Lakes Photo Club and then Naples Camera Club.    They inspired me to do better and better.  Thanks to them, I have won numerous awards at Naples Camera Club, Silver Lakes Photo Club, Photographic Society of America and the Roswell, Ga. Camera Club PSA .  Photography has given me a sense of enjoyment along with a competitive skill.
When our club added the “Altered Reality” category, I wasn’t sure I could master this, but I really enjoy the process even though it takes a tremendous amount of time.
I am currently  the Naples Camera Club Rep. for PSA, which means I collect and quite often  “judge” the entries to be sent in to the various divisions.  This is something I have come to really enjoy…the opportunity to see the beautiful images I receive.
I have also taken Jon Fishback’s course on Photo Analysis, which has been very beneficial since I’m often asked to judge at the Naples Camera Club.
I have had the pleasure of selling my photographs to Frame Shops, Garden Shops and Restaurants.
I am currently the Naples Camera Club Rep. and handle all the images sent to PSA and FCCC (Florida Camera Club Council.)
