Title : Gairloch (January)
How I did it : I stayed in the cottage on the right of the picture. I took the tripod out onto the road after sunset, when the lights came on in the village, but before the sky was black.
The result was quite nice, but I made it into a more impressionistic by using a duplicate layer and treating it with fractalius. Using layer blend overlay, I think it gave a more artistic appearance.

Anne, there is a lovely romantic feeling to this image which is visually appealing. You are to be congratulated on stepping out onto the ‘motorway’ with your tripod after sunset to capture the mood of the village. I like the way that you have the benefit of residual light in the sky as well as the glow of the artificial street lights in the left foreground and in the mid-ground, and the twinkling of the lights and reflections in the background. As if that was not enough, you have added the Fractalius Filter which has enhanced the overall artistic aesthetic. I just love the Fractalius effect and have started playing with it. |

Good use of the fractalius filter. It hasn’t been over done. Like many people just add to much. Lovely tonal range. The road leads you right into the image and give the viewer a question what is round the bend. Overall a top image with great overall balance.

This is so lovely. The lighting is perfect and the road because of its various colors leads us nicely into the village. The road itself gives a special feeling of warmth to this image. The fractalius filter is used to perfection here because it's not so obvious. The continuation of the village in the distance really helps the image, as well. Another great example of why taking the photo before it gets dark is so much more interesting. |

An interesting effect. The brilliance of the lower left corner is a bit too strong; suggest you crop 20% off the left side and tone down the road a little - - to throw more emphasis on the streetlight zone near the middle.

The image certainly does have an artistic appearance. The composition of the scene is absolutely well done with the road leading the viewer in the scene toward the cottage with the street light in front. The rule of thirds was applied with the street and cottages in the foreground, the mountains in the middle, and the magical sky in the background. The colors work very well together. Very well done. |

Anne, this is lovely image. The road takes you into the beauty beyond, which is waiting just around the bend. The colors and composition are perfect! Your use of the Fractalius Filter is subtle and not overdone. The image before the "creative" aspect is obviously a quality image, which makes the creative result even more appealing. This is definitely a "hang on the wall" image!! |

Anne Swearman - Biography
I have been interested in photography since I was eleven, but did not really spend too much time with it until my children were grown up. I accidentally joined a photographic society, because my 14 year old son was interested. I took him to the local club and said I would stay until he felt integrated. After about 6 months he got more interested in heavy metal music and left, but I stayed becuse I found it interesting. About 3 years later I became club president. When I became a club judge I went for LRPS, because I felt I needed confidence to judge other peoples pictures, and a year later, ARPS. I have been entering Internationals for about 10 years and have EFIAP. |
