July Image: “San Francisco”

How I did it -

Not sure I can explain exactly how I did this but I can give you the idea.  This was a shot of San Francisco taken from building.  I used perspective to straighten up the buildings a bit and then made some adjustments such as contrast and levels to make more separation.

I made a layer of the same shot and used filter ink and used a blending mode, I think multiply.  Made another copy of the original and used poster edges, then made black and white.  I used a sepia tone.  I then used a plug in called Mr Contrast which gave it an interesting effect and intensified the color.  I selected the moon and then used a multiply filter.

I copied the moon again to bring out more of the shadows.  I made both of these black and white.  I selected the edges of the moons as it was a three quarter moon and blurred them.

Karen Mason - Biography

My avocation is photography.  It is both a creative and spiritual outlet which has brought me a great deal of satisfaction over the years.  Most of my photography involves nature.  I am drawn to the earth and photography has taught me to see it in a new way.  Nature is the glory of the Rocky Mountains or the miracle of a nesting bird; it is also the intricate patterns and play of light on sand or rock.  Photography has taken me places and forced me to see more than I would as a passing tourist.  It has also made me keenly aware of how much we have to lose if we do not take care of what is left.  The wetlands filled in and replaced by concrete can never return.
The wonder of the photographic process is the way it takes me away from myself and the before and after.  While I am taking pictures or when I am working on an image in the computer I am in the “now”.  It is not really a thinking process; it is more like being lead down a path and trusting that the end of that path will provide a sense of harmony or wonder.
Of course, sometimes it leads to the delete button. Oh well.
