June Image - Pink Lady slipper 2008

I shot this in North Carolina at Nature Photography Weekend that Grandfather
Mountain sponsors each year for about 165 photographers. Grandfather
Mountain is a privately owned mountain.  There is a friendly contest,
speakers, and a banquet.  I learned a lesson this year - to be sure to
always check my ISO setting before I start shooting.  As a rule, I keep it
on 100; however, it had for some reason been turned to 800, which causes the
images to be too grainy for my liking.  I still like the lady slipper.

John Hackett I like the composition, and maybe the graininess that you do not like has given the image a gentle softness which I do like. The detail is still there.
Marti Buckely Well positioned and a nice image.  It seems a little soft to me in the slipper area and somewhat hot – like a flash went off.  The head of the flower is nice and sharp.   The stem is also not in focus.  Hard to get everything sharp, I know.  You did a good job especially at 800.

Beautiful image. The pink if vibrant. I wonder if it would have been sharper
at ISO 100. Lovely shot. I like it.

The composition looks very good.  The flower draws your eye in from the
lower left, and the stem and leaves hold you there.  The background is very
good.  Perhaps it is my monitor, but I think I would like to see a bit more
saturation.

Bob Athanasiou Good color, nice sharp photo. I don't see objectionable grain on my monitor.  I like the soft light.

Just in the past few years have I really gotten serious about photography as an art. In the late 1960s, I was a free lance reporter and took photographs to go along with my articles - even developed my own black and white prints. Then my children came along, and I mostly shot photos of family life events.

In 1999, after my husband (Wendell) took early retirement, he took the summer intensive photography course in Missoula, MT, with Rocky Mountain School of Photography, and came back home speaking a different language - all about photography. Afterwards, I took some photography classes in our local community college and attended workshops so I could learn what Wendell was talking about. Wendell has been a great inspiration for me. I enjoy all types of photography, but lately I have been drawn to shooting macros of patterns and textures. I shoot digitally with a Canon 10-D, and I process the images on my PC with Photoshop CS2 and print them on an Epson printer.

I am a member of the Photographic Society of Chattanooga, and PSA. I have served on the PSC Board in different capacities including as President, PSC newsletter editor, and club representative to PSA. Also, I serve PSA as the Director of Region 13 – NC, SC, and TN. Since I have quit work, we enjoy our photography hobby while traveling in our RV. I enjoy participating in the EI Study Group.
