February Title - Bridge over Virgin River at Emerald Pool Trailhead, Zion NP.

How I did it - EXIF: 1/90 sec, F11, ISO 200, Nikon D90, 16-85mm lens at 62mm (93mm full frame equivalent).

Attracted by: Intense light silhouetting bridge.  Dark framing light.

Intent: Capture silhouette while still being able to identify foreground, capture people in left third of frame.

Challenge: Difficult exposure. Too exhausted in 102 degree heat to hike back and dig ND grad out of backpack further down trail!  Opted to expose for background hoping to bring foreground back in editing.

Processing: Cropped a bit to cut out distracting grass in foreground and bring bridge down to top third of frame.  Using Lightroom3 adjustment brush only on foreground, brought brightness of river, rocks and foliage up; luminance of greens and yellows up slightly too.  That brought rocks out of almost complete

darkness. Sharpened a tad.

I am currently not working by choice after 3 careers; in the medical field, teaching and nonprofit management.  My current interests include a new passion for photography, voracious reading, gardening, hiking to interesting places, traveling, and the occasional canoeing jaunt.

My ‘stuff’ includes a Nikon D90, 16-85mm VR and 70-300mm VR lenses, circular polarizers, split ND filters, carbon fiber tripod and ball head.  Just started using LR3 and love it; coupled with PSE9.

Love to shoot landscapes, interesting skies and dramatic light, silhouettes, macro, monochrome, texture/patterns, minimalist scenes and what I call deconstructed photos – where one might not be able to tell what the item is.  Biggest challenge for me is shooting people; can’t get over feeling I am invading an intensely private space and feel uncomfortable doing so!

I want to learn how to get the WOW into my photography for personal fulfillment and possibly selling some work for pocket money.  Have learned a lot as a new member of the Delaware Photographic Society, where I live in Newark, DE about 35 miles south of Philadelphia.
