January image - Fire Demon

How I did it - I had produced a single-shot HDR (as per recent PSA article) of a cosy fire. The flames reminded me of stereotypical concepts of hell, demons etcetera. I had an image taken last Halloween with a small compact camera of a candlelit pumpkin lantern. The association was realized by cutting out the pumpkin from its pub bar, then solarising it to give the red eye and nose effect. Using layers, the two were merged by changing visibility levels, with smoothing, contrast and refeathering of the pumpkin.

COMMENTS:

Laurie Thompson I like the idea of the demons in the fire and all. I think it has possibilities but don't see it here. Play with the combination more - maybe lose the bright red in the "mouth".

Ruth Rittichier A very scary image, Peter. Too bad it's sooooo tiny. A great idea for Halloween.

Phillipa Frederiksen I like the idea of your image…but it is too small to appreciate fully. I DO like the way you have placed a simple object in the flames. It gives it a mystical feel.
Anna Goodchild Good use of adjustment layers which have created an atmospheric image by using 2 very ordinary images creatively. A simple but effective treatment. I am not sure that I would have recognised the eye and the nose had I not seen the separate image – but then that is the whole point of the title – demons are different things to different people.
Hillary Morin I like the idea here and the two images complement eachother well. I think I would try leaving the pumpkin as is (without the red solarizing effect in the mouth & eyes) and just have the flames surround it. They  certainly add to the atmosphere.

Biography

Hi, I am Peter Rowley, and I am a scientist in a hospital, I work as an electron microscopist, but am qualified in both cell biology and cellular pathology (technology) also. My interests are the usual, but especially photography (of course), and travel, particularly Asia. Both computers and camera are my passion, and I have had both for many years. Therefore, as digital camera started to become a viable reality, and 100ASA negative film became impossible to get, I began my sojourns into not just recording images digitally, but processing them too, merging the technical with the artistic. being a member here will, I hope, be a natural progression of the same process, as I move from local camera club, to international club. It states I am USA in the gallery, but I actually live in London, UK. I am a member of Carshalton Camera Club in South London.
