July - Lifestyle Portrait

How I did it -

I wanted to take a few "lifestyle" portraits of my kids, with a somewhat different look and feel.  I underexposed the background by about 1.5 stops, and used am SB-800 flash, set manually at 1/4 power, for the foreground lighting.  If I do this shot again, I will probably use a gobo or a grid to isolate the face and reduce the lighting on the car and white shirt.
  • Nikon D700
  • Nikkor 85mm f/1.8
  • Custom White Balance (6150K)
  • ISO 100
  • 1/250 second @ f8

Tom's Comments It is nice to see a photo with a different slant from the usual.  I like the subject, your capturing your caughter in a very natural and relaxed setting.  You did a good job of making a nice but our of focus background that adds to the framing of the main subject.  The red car makes a nice boarder helping to keep the viewers eye on the main subject.  Your idea of a different flash is worth trying.  Very nice photo and one to keep on the office desk.

Kathy's Comments This is a very pleasing portrait. I like the way the red on the car leads the eye into the photo from the left to your pretty subject. The photo is nicely exposed, (except for parts of the white shirt-as you mentioned) and it has an appealing horizontal feel. The out of focus trees in the background add nicely to the photo but I would suggest perhaps cropping off the top dark horizontal line or at the very least darken the light areas within that line if you think it is necessary to help frame the photo.
