Havashu Falls

January, 2012

Technical detail Camera Canon EOS 5D Mk II
Lens 16-35 mm canon zoom at 24 mm on tripod
f22/0.4 sec
ISO 50
Filters graduated ND
Time 8 am

This image was shot in August 2010 at Havashu falls. The falls are at about 2-3 hrs drive from
Flagstaff in Arizona followed by a 8 mile hike or helicopter ride. We chose the later. August was too warm ( 110 F) even for us residing in India
a relatively warm country. We had to cut down our 3 night camping tour to 1 night only because of the heat. There are several interesting falls in the area like Mooney and the one at Havashu.
The biggest problem in this early morning shot was the winds bringing water drops on the filter. I guess with more time one can wait for the wind to change.
The sky has been treated in PS using gradient tool and water marks have been treated using stamp and clone tool.

COMMENTS:

Warren Wilson I like the composition and the rocks in lower left. The water has a nice softness. I think I'd like to see the water a bit brighter.

Great grab of the falls! Interesting lead from the top of the falls into the pool below. For some reason there seems to be a dropoff of sharpness on the rocks and foliage to the left of the flow even though you were on a tripod at f/22. I have attached a tighter crop to bring the falls off center and eliminate some of the sky. I also ran it through NIK’s Vivezia to open up the shadows on those rocks. Finally there are a couple of places

where there looks like some blemishes where the sky meets the rock in the center. Also, a sensor spot on the falls.

Terry Kness Nice image. Good shutter speed on falls. I would like to see more detail in the rock wall, dodging to lighten I think would improve the image.
Meg Puente Wonderful waterfall!  You’ve gotten a great silky effect on the water by slowing your shutter speed to just the right level.  Have you tried lightening the gamma?  I would also like to see a bit cropped from the top, and/or maybe putting some highlights in the falling water.

Best of yours yet.  good control of shutter speed.  Nice light.

Barun Sinha - Biography

I am a urological surgeon. My photographic interest started 35 yrs ago when I purchased a used SLR. For many years it was limited to snap shooting.

During my training period in surgery I nearly got separated from photography and the interest rekindled when I joined a local photo group of which I am the president now. I regularly participate in both national as well as internationals salons. Wild life, nature, travel, landscape and portraits are my favorite in that order. I travel regularly both in India as well as abroad and never without my camera gear and Africa is the most frequent destination. A year and a half ago I started shooting digital. Canon D 10 followed by D 20. Thinking for D5. Started learning Photoshop in June 2005 and thanks to the excellent book of Sid Pearce I have learnt the first few words of the alphabet. Joined PSA in 2004.
