January Image - Old Caboose

How I did it -

I took this photo of an interior in an old caboose in a RR Exposition in Northern  Kentucky.  Since the photo lacked color, I made it into a Black and White. First I adjusted it in Photoshop CS5 for exposure, contrast, etc.  Then I desaturated it with a Gradient Map adjustment layer. I then created a three dimensional look with High Dynamic Range (HDR) using Photomatrix Pro. I did not use multiple exposures, but a single one with tonal mapping. I then used High Pass sharpening to bolster the effect and added a white border.

Mohanan Nair Yes, the B/W is better. Sharpness appears to be a little extra. Nice composition.
Sally Grugan

Interesting project-very sophisticated techniques.  Good job!

Kathleen L. Sims Nice job.  Thanks for showing how to desaturate using the Gradient Map Adjustment Layer  and now to add a three dimensional look.  I plan to give each method a try.
Bogdan Bricelj Ernie, in such cases it's good to make convertion to bw. Also the "old" efect is good. I just don't know, what's caboose, so I don't see the meaning of the photo.

Ernie Zimmerman - Biography

Upon retirement, I pursued photography with a passion that I previously reserved for my scientific career in Developmental Biology and Birth Defects. My interest in photography is broad based and I use digital manipulation of images in Photoshop, currently CS5. I initiated and led the Hunters Run Photographic Club from 2004 to 2006.  I split my time in Boynton Beach, FL and Cincinnati, OH and am a member of the Boynton Beach Camera Club  and the Photographic Club of Greater Cincinnati.  Joining PSA, I hope to further improve my photographic skills.
