Title - Red Barn
Image Date: June 2008

How I did it -

Pretty much a straight shot, did a bit of cropping, LAB color sharpening, ( GO to MODE, LAB COLOR, open the Lightness channel and then use smart sharpen to just sharpen the gray scale by this method you can be a bit more aggressive with the sharpening without the halos and artifacts in RGB mode.

COMMENTS:

Joan Field The barn is very well placed in the frame with the two sets of river rocks pointing to it. Also the sky seems to direct us to the barn. Maybe crop a little off the water so the balance between the size of the sky and the size of the river is a little different. Right now they are about equivalent in value and the sky is so much prettier.

Linda L. Hudson An interesting scene. I like the way the rocks lead one's eyes to the red barn and the way the red barn contrasts with the sky.

Bobbie Delory

Great shot of the red barn between the stacked rocks. I love it.

Jarrett Reagan You certainly have an eye for composition and light. The rocks draw you into the barn and the sky is a wonderful contrast that helps the barn stand out. Perhaps a tighter crop would be better? As always, your work is clear, well balanced, and provides a wonderful insight into your travels.

Member Bio
George Bebout, APSA - Biography

I retired from the engineering dept at John Deere Waterloo in Oct 1984 after 34 years of service. My photographic career started as a boy, during family outings my job was to “carry the Kodak.” I still have that #2 Box Brownie.

I picked up some formal photographic training in the Navy and after my discharge it became my principle hobby. My PSA career started in 1962 and I dropped out in 1969 due to job demands. Rejoined in 1973 and my wife Viola and are both life members and APSA's.

Over the years I have held the following PSA positions, AR, DR (Iowa), Chairman of the Nominating Committee, Chapters Chairman, Chapters VP, I resigned from the Excom in 1992 due to health problems. Taking my doctors advice we loaded up the Airstream trailer and started traveling, We are still at it, We winter in south Texas where we have a home in an RV resort in Pharr TX. We spend the summers traveling wherever our interests take us.

I have been a Nikon user since 1961. I went digital in 1989, buying a Nikon film scanner and scanning slides for a number of years then bought an Olympus DL600 digital, I am currently using a Nikon D200 with an assortment of lenses with a D100 as a spare body, My wife Vi uses a D70, and favors VR lenses.

My primary interest is landscape, nature and travel photography, I have recently started doing a lot of digital photo essays as a means of presenting some of our work.

I shoot only RAW images and work primarily with Adobe Photoshop CS2 and Paintshop Pro, I have yet to find any one program that does everything I want to do. I try to do all of the “creative” work in the camera and only use the computer to make whatever adjustments are necessary to present the image the way I envisioned it at the time of exposure, doing mostly what I would have done in a darkroom. I do most of my shooting either early in the morning or at dusk which gives me the light quality I prefer
