Cormorant

How I did it -

My objective was to enhance the image and still maintain the natural look. I first cropped the image to 800 X 600. Next I copied the background to a new layer and changed the blending mode to darken an overexposed image. The effect was too much so I reduced the opacity of the layer to 70%. I merged the copy layer to background. I used a combination of the Clone Stamp and Healing Brush to remove the distracting reed behind the head. I recently reviewed the Topaz filters for the Journal so I wanted to see what Adjust 4 and Detail 2 would do on this image. The eye of a cormorant is this nice emerald green so I used Adjust 4 to increase the color of the eye. Because this was applied to the whold image I used a Layer Mask to restrict the effect to the eye and part of the bill. After applying the mask I used Detail 2 to bring increast the contrast in the bird and bring up the detail. I didn't was this applied to the background behind the bird so again I used a Layer Mask to restrict the effect to the bird. I finally used a Curves Adjustmetn Layer to darken slightly the corners of the image to hold the viewers attention on the bird. I used the mask of the adjustment layer to restrict the darkening to the corners.
