Title
-Street In Eureka Springs
How I did it -
This is an HDR
image of a street in Eureka Springs that we were
visiting in October. It was shot handheld, f8, ISO
200 using 3 images and Nik SW.

The stronger section of this image is the right
two-thirds with its perfectly exposed row of colorful shop fronts
plus ramp ending with the people grouped under the
"Quilts" sign. I would crop in from the left almost
up to this sign. This would eliminate blown-out details,
telephone wires, plus empty sky, and make for a stronger
image.

The HDR has brought out all of the details in the
shadow areas well, but I am not sure if this is the best type of
picture for the use of HDR as the result is very strong colors. |

I just don't think this shot works. The angle is good
but the HDR is not that effective and the image is not clear. It's a
nice travel shot for your memories. |

This was a good opportunity to use HDR. It might be
interesting to merge just the 0 ev and - ev images to see if that
would open the shadows a bit more. I might suggest that you reduce
the blue saturation to make the asphalt a bit more gray. Darkening
the bright sky and the sunny spots on the asphalt could minimize
those distracting bright spots, and I think a little crop on the
left edge could eliminate those bright buildings at that end of the
street. |

I marvel that you did such a nice job with HDR
processing without using a tripod! The entire image is nice and
sharp and the colors are great, too. The buildings seem to be
leaning toward the street, and this could be corrected in
post-processing. In Elements, I would first use the straighten tool
in the center of the image to get the center building straight,
vertically. Then, I would use Image>Transform>Perspective and
drag the top of the photo out to the sides a bit. |

graduated from Grove City College a long time ago with a BS ME
degree. I joined the Navy thru OCS and was assigned a ship in
Norfolk, VA. After my tour there, I went to a ship homeported in
Yokosuka, Japan. After PG school in Monterey, Vietnam and
Washington tours, I got off of active duty and stayed in the
Naval Reserve for another 20 years, retiring in 1991. After I
got out of the Navy, I had positions with defense companies or
the government in Annapolis, Md, Fort Meade, Md, Greenville, Tx,
St. Louis and finally Colorado, where I retired from IBM in June
2006. I was a Project Manager.
I have been taking pictures since
college using a point and shoot film camera. I started taking
photos with SLR's in the Navy when I went to Japan. I changed to
digital in the 1990's and a DSLR last year. I take landscapes,
animals, birds, travel photos. I have thousands of slides and
prints from the Navy tours to Japan, Europe, Vietnam and our own
travels. Now I am strictly digital and have quite a few pictures
saved and online.
