June Image - Carriage Horses

This image, "Carriage Horses", was taken last October in Williamsburg, VA.
It needed a lot of cloning to remove background clutter. The only other
editing was increasing saturation. It is a pair of horses that pulled an
old style wagon of through the streets of the recreated village. Tourists
were the passengers. It was taken at the end of the day as the horses had
finished their duties for the day.

My, we are sure into animal personality interviews this month. Honestly, John, we didn’t collude to do that. These guys are really lovable and interesting. I sort of feel bad for the one with the eye patch, but we’ll just call him a pirate. The old rule against two subjects applies only if they do not interact. If they do, then it’s “American Gothic” or some such exception. Nice feel for a relationship between these guys. It may just be our medium, but a touch of Shadow/Highlight might have brought out more detail in the coats. Love them, though.

While this is a great composition and these are striking horses with lots of crisp clear features and beautiful coloration, the blinder covering one eye takes away a great deal from the overall look, of this could, be fantastic photo.

John Hackett They might of finished working for the day, but the harnesses set the scene and tell us what they are. A nice character study of the pair. A well taken picture sharp and well composed.

Born in Atlanta, Georgia, I consider myself a true Southerner. Spending lots of time with my grandparents in Georgia allowed me to put down my Southern roots.
However, since my father was career Air Force, I was also an Air Force brat, and we never stayed in one place more than four years. My first camera was an old Brownie, and from there I graduated to a 35mm while we were stationed in Japan. There was always a camera in my hand, but I didn't get serious until the digital era and a trip to Alaska five years ago. A trip to Ecuador's Rainforest and the Galapagos last year provided a wealth of wildlife to photograph and made me a true lover of the camera and what it can accomplish.

My home is in South Florida on the edge of the Everglades, west of Ft. Lauderdale. Now that I am no longer working there is plenty of time for me, and I spend a lot of it with my photography which I find very relaxing and fulfilling. My favorite subjects are wildlife and nature especially Florida's wading birds. However, I am finding it easier to shoot almost anything - people, landscapes, architecture and anything else that happens along. My Grandchildren are also some of my favorite subjects-they are learning to tolerate the ever present camera in their face.

Last year I finally joined a camera club and the local Everglades PSA Chapter. That has made a big of difference in my work. I have learned so much in a year. My camera is an Olympus SLR 510 and a back-up E-300 with multiple lenses. Any cleaning up of my photos is done in Photoshop CS2.
