Title:Sailing High

How I did it:
Technique: Initial raw capture with D200 and Nikon 70-300 lens. Post-processed first in LR3 and then some Nik software filters to darken sky and make balloon colors deeper with more contrast. Some use of PS CS5 content aware fill to remove distractions. Photo was taken at the annual Gunnison, Colorado July 4th weekend balloon festival. I wanted to convey a sense of human fragility while denoting the vastness of our world. The myriad colors remind me of the diversity we should all appreciate in all we encounter.

Comments
Maria Korab-Laskowska I like the image and post-processing. From design point of view I like how balloons are cropped on the right but would prefer to have a bit more space on the left. That would suggest flow of balloons across diagonal line .
Tom Icklan A fine image with lots of punch. A small nit pic. Many commercial products, as you know, do a fantastic job on color but sharpen clouds too much. Try applying filters on the balloons after selecting them, followed by a treatment of the sky to maintain fluffy white clouds.
Mark Greenberg (postcomment space) I really enjoy the opportunity to share photos and ideas with other photographers. There is no question that my own work is improving because of these benefits. Thanks to all.

Kieu-Hanh Vu It’s very interesting to learn on the technique everyone uses to improve his/her image in our group. I have not gone that far yet! I like the position of the three balloons in this image, especially the third balloon in the right corner with different designs and colors to complement the other two balloons in higher position, which create a pleasing, balanced composition.

It seems like I have always had a camera of some sorts, especially after my children were born. In 1976, we moved to Topeka, Kansas from Chicago. My professional career was spent in diagnostic radiology (a truly black and white world ). In 2000, I attended my first workshop under the direction of John Shaw and Joseph van Os. No question that I was hooked on learning more and improving my skills. My interests are primarily nature, macro and architecture. I am a member of the Topeka Camera Club and the Topeka Art Guild. I only recently joined the PSA but already sense the warmth of membership and the shared joy of image making. I retired completely in 2008 and have enjoyed the greater amount of time I can now allot to my photography and post-processing. Part of the year we live in Gunnison, Colorado which affords a variety of conditions for amazing photo opportunities.
