Title - Cades Cove Homestead

How I did it

Here’s another image from Cades Cove, this one taken in the spring. When I came upon this cabin I was struck by the difference in scale between the large (majestic) trees and hills in the middle/background and the cabin in the foreground. I used a graduated ND filter for the sky but the cabin was still a stop or so too dark ... since it is partially in shadow and is a dark tone. I could have used a second ND filter but that would begin showing in the tree tops so I decided to take the photo anyway and “fix” things in photoshop later. In photoshop I used the shadow-highlight tool to compress the tonal range a bit by lightening the shadows and increasing contrast in the sky. I then added a curves layer to set the overall contrast. Finally I added another curves layer and mask to just brighten up some remaining flat areas in the cabin.

Comments

Maria Korab-Laskowska  I like very much the subtle tones and overall composition with beautiful shadows. As always your image is very clean and well thought. Are you using tripod? I never used any ND filter and hoping to learn digital techniques to achieve the goal. The tonal balance you have achieved is great.
Tom Icklan I have made many trips to Cades Cove but have never captured this scene as well as you have. It has spring written all over it and I hope you have time to do "fall" in the near future. The tonal balance you have achieved is just fine and your foreground is perfect (IMHO). Perhaps the blue in the sky could be a shade darker to help the clouds pop but this is a very minor criticism and is strictly a personal choice. Printed and framed this image could hang in anyones living room.
Annette Chiu The cabin has a nice surrounding. You did a good job bringing detail of the trees. I would like to see more light on the left side. The scenic looks very peaceful.
Phil Geraci This one I can identify with, having been to Cade's Cove several times. No comments other than I find it approapriate to the area, and very typical of what we see on the road around the area..Did you get any photos of the honey combs which dot the driveways?
Linda Phelps WOW! Your camera & editing techniques came together to produce a beautiful calm & restful woodland scene! I like the dark shadows that give way to the sunlit cabin. The touches of light on the front of the cabin under the porch add depth to the cabin.

While I’ve always enjoyed taking photos I didn’t take it seriously until the late 90’s when my wife replaced my old Canon AE1 with a Nikon 8008. At the same time my father-in-law introduced me to the power and utility of Photoshop for correcting the color casts in my underwater images. Since then there has been a steady parade of cameras, lenses, housings, slide scanner and other “essential” equipment. A few years ago I grudgingly decided to go 100% digital. While I still miss leaning over my light table and “touching” the images I would not go back.

Equipment:Nikon D200 Various zoom and fixed focal length Nikon lenses Nikon flashes and an assortment of diffusers and reflectors,Gitzo Mountaineer tripod, Epson 2200, Image editing software: Photoshop CS3.
