Title - Maine Lighthouse

August 2010 Image

How I did it -This image was taken on a recent trip to Maine. I have a version I created from multiple exposures using Photoshop CS5 HDR Plus. I took that image and applied the Topaz Labs, Adjust 4 plugin filter. I started with the Paint present and I made my own adjustments. Just wanted to have some fun.

COMMENTS:

Allen Gannaway Beautiful image. I like the vivid colors and the artistic effect, but that may cause the unsharpness. With the horizon slanting so much I would have expected bigger waves. Suggest darkening the foreground as the quality falls off in that area.
Bob Elliot  I can understand why you would want to "painter" this scene. I would bet that it is taken by almost everyone with a camera who passes by. For me, I would prefer a little less as some areas appear more worked than others. With your command of PS and Painter, I would like to see more brush strokes. But then I'm new (and old) and grouchy and will be interested in the other comments.
Ron Alexander  A perfect shot for this filter effect. I'm impressed how much it really looks painted; much better than my trials using the standard Photoshop filter. One could make an argument for more cropping: The foreground vegetation and some of the water, but that's just personal preference.
Lynne Royce
Don von Wolffradt  This is a neat image with bits and pieces being sharp and others not recognizable, but the overall image comes though. I have a similar image of the Portland Head Light taken 15 years ago without the special effects.
Monica Woodhead  I'm not found of the overall picture. I like how the lighthouse appears, the colors are beautiful, but the water and the rocks just don't do it for me. Some of the rocks seem to have definition where other rocks are quite blurred, as is the water. It doesn't quite have the painted look I've seen from you.

Member Bio
Stan Ashbrook, FPSA - Biography

I have been a member of PSA for almost 30 years. I've been interested in both slides and prints, having had a darkroom for many years where I enjoyed both mono and color printing, but when we sold our home a couple of Years ago, the darkroom had to go, a sad day. The computer rescued me and I now do things in my computer I used to dream about doing in the darkroom.
I have been a PSA Chapter Chairman, Zone Director, DR, Chairman of Chapters Committee, Chairman of PSA's Nominating Committee past Chairman of EID. I am also a member of a digital photography club called Digital Photographic Artists which I helped found. I'm also VP of the Florida Camera Club Council.
I was a Manufacturers Representative for Electronic components and now retired. In other words, I sold the electronic things inside computers and other things electronic to people who make computers and other electronic equipment. As you can guess, it was a natural to develop an interest in computers and soon as they became affordable, I jumped in, replacing my darkroom with what Sil Horwitz, FPSA refers to as my Lightroom. I have been married to my wife Bev for 47 years and have 2 sons, one a PSA member and former PSA Scholarship winner whose true love is Stereo photography but he is now learning his Nikon D70.
I sold all of my film cameras and purchased an Olympus E20, which I sold when I bought a Canon Digital Rebel, 17 -55 mm and 75-300 IS lens. I use a PC, Windows 2000 and Photoshop CS. I teach Photoshop at a couple of local locations. I use an Epson R200 printer.
